AIX Global Cabin Concepts Lab: Indian Market
India’s aviation interiors ecosystem is entering a new phase of development, underpinned by rapid domestic expansion and increasing participation in global aerospace supply chains. Long characterised as a price-sensitive, density-led market, India is now seeing a broader shift in how cabin interiors are designed, delivered and maintained across both commercial and business aviation.
Fleet growth remains a defining feature. India holds one of the world’s largest aircraft order books, with Air India’s 600-aircraft order and IndiGo’s 1,000-plus A320neo family backlog driving long-term expansion, alongside continued growth from Akasa Air. In parallel, domestic air travel is rising, with 161 million passengers recorded in 2024, supported by rising incomes, competitive fares and ongoing airport development.
At the same time, the supporting cabin-interiors ecosystem is evolving. Domestic MROs and DGCA-approved suppliers are extending their capabilities beyond basic refurbishment into certified seating, soft goods and component-level work, gradually reducing reliance on overseas providers for certain categories of interior work, particularly on narrowbody aircraft and regional platforms.
While commercial aviation dominates in scale, business aviation and non-scheduled operations also play an important role in shaping demand for bespoke interiors, refurbishment and specialised cabin solutions. Across all segments, operating conditions — including climate, utilisation rates and infrastructure variability — continue to influence material choices, maintenance cycles and design priorities.
India’s cabin-interiors market reflects a complex balance of scale, cost discipline and evolving expectations, with different segments progressing at varying speeds. But one thing is clear: India is no longer simply importing cabin solutions. It’s starting to engineer them.
