New passenger experience innovations dominate first day of Aircraft Interiors Expo 2016

- AIX sees marked rise in VIP airline visitors -

5th April, 2016 – Industry leaders gathered in Hamburg yesterday for the opening of the 17th annual Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) - the global event which showcases the innovations that will enhance the inglight passenger experience in the years to come.

From 5th - 7th April, AIX is expected to attract over 16,000 visitors and over 1,000 executives from over 180 airlines, and the show's opening day saw a 10% rise in airline VIP visitors over 2015. AIX is part of Passenger Experiece Week, which also includes the Passenger Experience Conference, and the World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo with which AIX is co-located.

AIX is attended this year by over 530 exhibitors, including 145 companies exhibiting for the first time. On display are a huge range of new innovations that are set to transform the passenger experience - from inflight entertainment, to aircraft seating, and many other element of cabin interionrs. Exhibitors' booths were busy throughout the day with visitors from airlines, media and other industry stakeholders looking at how new technology can enhance an airline's brand through element the passenger experience, such as Pitch, Mankiewicz, digEcor and PXCom who were also displaying the latest solutions in cabin interiors and connectivity.

There were a range of new cabin interior products unveiled during the show’s first day. These included Fokker Services who displayed their iShade electronically dimmable window which can exclude 99.5% of light through controllable dimming. Also enhancing the cabin environment was STG Aerospace, who demonstrated how their photoluminescent cabin lighting and blue emergency floor path markings transform the cabin into a relaxing travel environment.

In the show's dedicated IFEC zone, which has grown by almost a third this year, exhibitors highlighted how in-flight entertainment and connectivity has become one of the fastest growing and most in demand elements of the passenger experience. Panasonic Avionics announced an exciting new partnership with Singapore Airlines to offer connectivity and custom inflight entertainment through their eX3 system across the airlines Boeing 787-10 and Airbus A350-900 fleets.

Gogo brought their newly 2Ku fitted Boeing 737-500 to the Hamburg for the first time, situating the plane in Hamburg for invitation only flights. Inmarsat also shared the latest updates on Global Xpress (GX), which provides high-speed passenger in-flight connectivity as part of their global coverage delivered through a single operator.

Connections such as these will enhance new technology which is bringing entertainment experience from the ground to the air, such as Skylights’ Sky Theater. These 3D goggles let flyers transport themselves whilst at 30,000 feet.

Focussing on seating were a range of exhibitors who have developed new materials, seat designs and innovative uses of space to bring the comfort of the living room to the aircraft cabin. Aviointeriors showed off their new premium economy C4 seat which combines comfort and cost saving for both passengers and airlines. Also present was Body Corporation whose SOLIMIDE foam, which was originally used by NASA as spacecraft insulation, to take comfort to new levels.
