Andy talks about Certification, Installation & Security Challenges for the Connected Aircraft.

Q: What does it take to get your Cabin WiFi IFE&C solution flying?

A: Airlines recognize they must have a reliable and secure solution to meet the needs of their passengers, crew and operations staff. However, the cost of installation, certification and overall schedule for retrofitting an aircraft fleet can be a complicated process when doing it on your own.

Q: Does Kontron offer certification services?

A: Well as a matter of fact, we just announced a collaboration with CarlisleIT which allows is the offer This “One Stop Shop” approach making it easy for customers to launch and deploy inflight systems for wireless IFE, connectivity, retail, aircraft operations and other applications.

Q: Do you already have proven installation on airlines today?

A: Kontron and CarlisleIT already have an approved STC for cabin Wi-Fi system installation on the Airbus A320 family of aircraft, and STC approval for Boeing 737 is anticipated by mid-2018. The Kontron/CarlisleIT business model is to offer use of the cabin Wi-Fi installation design and STC to customers at no charge, minimizing both time to deployment and up-front investment costs.

Q: How do you help ensure the safety of your wireless IFE solution?

A: On an aircraft, you’re not above it all in terms of network security. The same threats that plague public wireless networks on the ground make communications in the air just as vulnerable and easy to hack. Implementing layered security measures and a robust operations infrastructure for WiFi services on an aircraft is an effective approach to counter malicious threats and address onboard network complexities by using Kontron’s AirDefense™ best-in-class wireless security and asset tracking.

Q: How can I find out more about what it takes to get my aircraft IFE&C program certified?
