Aircraft Interiors Expo 2015 climbs to new heights

Organised by Reed Exhibitions, the 16th edition of Aircraft Interiors Expo proved a resounding success welcoming over 9,000 visitors (pre-audit figure) from 14 -16 April 2015. More than 1,000 airline representatives were attracted, with a 28% increase in VIP Airline visitors from 2014, by over 530 exhibiting companies from 30 different countries, including more than 58 new exhibitors. There was an 8% increase in exhibition space compared to 2014 - ensuring that Aircraft Interiors Expo 2015 offered the most comprehensive showcase of new and innovative aircraft interior products spread over seven halls compared to five in 2014, including a record size IFE Zone which grew by 31%.

Developments in IFE and Connectivity proved one of the dominating themes of the event with the latest innovative technologies displayed by 78 companies in the largest ever IFE Zone. Panasonic Avionics Corporation (Panasonic) announced a major milestone with the 700th aircraft installation of its eXConnect inflight Wi-Fi system. After solving bird strike, Panasonic installed 250 aircraft with eXConnect in 2014. Over 300 are planned for installation this year to achieve the 1,000th aircraft in 1Q 2016.

The company will introduce massive capacity increases coming later this year, including 200mbps over CONUS (Continental U.S.), the Atlantic Ocean and into Europe with High Throughput Satellite (HTS) providing increased bandwidth. With future updates planned over Europe and Asia, HTS will cover all of the world’s high traffic areas by Q4 2017.

The show has become an institution in terms of getting all of the key stakeholders in the industry to one place at the same time, and we will certainly be back next year,” said Matthias Walther, Manager, Integrated Marketing at Panasonic Avionics Corporation.

Visitors saw the highly anticipated next-generation digEplayer NV from digEcor. The new series NV is the only portable Audio/Video On Demand solution encompassing both the practical features of a custom device and the contemporary look and feel of a consumer tablet at a lower total cost of ownership. It is available in 8, 10 and 12” versions.

The NV is approved for early window content from all major studios and independent distributors and features enhanced high definition screens, faster processing power, seamless capacitive touch and fully accelerated graphics. In addition to its IFE capabilities, digEcor also announced a new LED cabin lighting solution giving airlines 4 billion colour and light intensity levels to maximise their passengers’ comfort during flight.

The new and exclusively designed USA Pavilion provided an ideal platform for a range of smaller and medium size companies to promote their products and services. Washington State made its Aircraft Interiors Expo debut as part of a global campaign to promote its aircraft interiors sector, which comprises some 1,300 supply chain companies. Four Washington State companies were represented on the stand, which formed part of the US Pavilion.

The success of this year’s exhibition was preceded by a stimulating and engaging conference, attended by almost 400 delegates comprised of senior representatives of major airlines, air framers and cabin interiors suppliers, which took place on 13 April at the CCH - Congress Centre Hamburg.

The crucial importance of creativity in both the technology and service sectors was highlighted in the opening and closing sessions. Opening the proceedings, Professor Richard Seymour, founder of Seymourpowell, one of Europe's most well-known and accomplished designers, urged air transport industry delegates to stop their preoccupation with providing airline passengers with packaged entertainment and open up their minds to the wonders of the world above which they are travelling.

The closing sessions featured three more outstanding creative minds, namely Reuben Arnold, Brand and Customer Engagement Director, Virgin Atlantic; Dr Helge Sachs, Head of Corporate Innovation Management and Product Development, Lufthansa Technik; and Janis Vanags, Vice-President Corporate Communications, airBaltic. In a debate moderated by Blake Emery, Director Differentiation Strategy, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the three experts defined what innovation meant to them and how it was delivered in their organisations.

Next year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo will take place from 5 -7 April 2016, with the Passenger Experience Conference scheduled for 4 April 2016.
