New seating and galley equipment flies into Aircraft Interiors Expo 2012

A host of innovative approaches to seating and airline galleys will be on display next month when Aircraft Interiors Expo returns to the Hamburg Messe from 27-29 March.

Following interest in its pre-production concept at the 2011 exhibition, Pitch Aircraft Seating Systems has rapidly advanced its design for a new light weight seat, due to be showcased at this year’s show. Developed in conjunction with Intier Automotive for single aisle short-haul flights, the innovative seating solution weighs less than 25kg and features a backrest moulded from lightweight composite materials. A number of airlines have already expressed significant interest in Pitch’s sophisticated design and, having successfully passed the landmark 16g dynamic test, the company is on track to deliver the seats at the end of the year.

The trend towards lightweight economy seat products is continued by aerospace engineering specialist, Acro Aircraft Seating whose Superlight Ultra seat gets its first showing in Hamburg this year. Launch airline Primera Air has recently taken delivery of the first production seats, to be installed on its five-strong 737NG fleet. Acro says it has combined low cost of ownership with a robust yet still light weight design and increased leg room to create a practical option that is already proving popular.

RECARO Aircraft Seating will use the show to introduce a new seat for the business class market. RECARO’s solution provides passengers on shorter journeys with increased comfort and living space, as well as plenty of storage space for personal items such as phones, mp3 players and reading material. Manufactured using carbon fibre materials to minimise its weight, the seat makes optimal use of the available space even at 42 inch pitch. Bridging the gap between short and long-haul flights the ‘fixed shell’ design allows for the seat settings to be altered to pre-programmed positions, without disturbing fellow travellers.

Meanwhile ZIM FLUGSITZ will also showcase a new business class seat. Available from mid March, the technically innovative BC-01 employs kinematics to maximise passenger comfort and incorporates a multi-material design to ensure weight savings, while boasting a variety of customisable features. The company will also demonstrate a lightweight version of its basic economy class seat, based on the highly successful ECO-01 model.

Visitors to the show will also be privy to B/E Aerospace’s Essence Inserts Collection - an impressive selection of premium galley equipment which includes a range of beverage makers, ovens and chiller products. Through its innovative but easy to use design and improved product performance, airlines look set to reap the rewards of increased power efficiency, improved ergonomics and reliability, enhanced aesthetics and reduced weight.

John Hyde, Aircraft Interiors Expo Exhibition Director, said: “The increasing innovation that is currently emerging from the interiors industry is truly impressive. The quest for lighter, more durable designs, which still manage to maximise passenger comfort, shows that suppliers have really taken airline customer requirements on board. Aircraft Interiors Expo is an ideal showcase for this wide range of creative ingenuity, which is proving so essential to staying ahead in today’s competitive market.”

About the Aviation Cluster Hamburg Metropolitan Region:
In 2001, the “Joint Initiative Hamburg – The place for aviation” was established by Hamburg aviation companies, trade associations, institutions, universities, and authorities. A network of partners with a combined workforce of more than 39,000 people developed out of the initiative. It has now been formalised with the establishment of the “Aviation Cluster Hamburg Metropolitan Region Association”. The largest employers in this technology-driven network are Airbus, Lufthansa Technik and Hamburg Airport.

A further 300 small and medium-sized enterprises are also actively involved in the industry as suppliers and service providers; some of these are represented by the Hanse-Aerospace and HECAS associations. The integrated strategy of making aviation more economical, more ecological, more comfortable, more reliable, and more flexible helped the Aviation Cluster Hamburg Metropolitan Region to win the non-industry specific Leading-Edge Cluster competition, organised by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in September 2008. The Ministry has provided a sustainable basis for the development of the cluster to a competency centre for “a new kind of aviation” by investing around 40 million euros in forward-looking northern German aviation projects.
